I'm not sure I know any 15 year old rugby league players who don't think that they are unbreakable. I played hard as a youngster and my peers were right there with me. It's astonishing what we used to put our bodies through when we were young.

I guess one day I pushed those limits a bit too hard and ended up changing my life forever. Some people say that a broken neck would've broken their spirit and at moments I've felt the same. I was never going to play rugby league again... what was i going to do?

After 3 months in rehab I started to participate in sport again. Initially I tried my hand at a wide range of sports including athletics, swimming and table tennis. But what I really wanted was something to replace rugby league and within a year of my accident I was selected to represent Australia in Wheelchair Rugby at the Stoke Mandeville Games in England.

I moved back to NZ in 1996 and since then I have been involved in a number of World Champs, Oceania’s and the Atlanta, Sydney and Athens Paralympics. I have competed overseas at the Japanese Nationals, in the USA for two years running as well as numerous seasons in the Australian League. In NZ I play for Auckland but have also competed for Canterbury.

I feel that life is full of choices. I'm not religious but I do believe that things happen for reasons unbeknown to us... I'm still trying to figure out most of those reasons. At 15 I had 2 choices; I could throw my life away and be an ass-hole or I could try and make something of myself, regardless of the situation I was in.

To this day I'm forever thankfull of the experiences I've had since my accident 15 years ago. I have travelled more than any of my school and league mates, I've represented both Australia and New Zealand in wheelchair rugby.
